Cross-Country Season begins Monday August 28

The 2017 Ann Arbor Track Club (AATC) Youth Cross-Country season starts this coming Monday, August 28. Practices will be held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30 – 7:30 PM, at two different locations:
County Farm Park on Mondays: The entrance to County Farm Park is located at 2230 Platt Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48104.   Admission is FREE, and parking is FREE. Please meet at the  Pavilion. Please note there is NO PRACTICE on Monday, September 4 due to the Labor Day holiday.
The University of Michigan Arboretum on Wednesdays and Thursdays: (please meet at the brown metal gate to the park entrance — at the “River Entrance” by the far end of the parking lot that’s below the Helicopter pads:

     – Take Fuller Rd to E. Medical Center Drive.

– Take E. Medical Center Drive towards the main Hospital (the road veers to the left
around the hospital).

– As you approach the Radiation/Oncology building, take a left onto a service drive
(Nichols Drive) that will lead down to the parking lot, below the helicopter pads.

– The entrance to the Arboretum is on the far side of this parking lot, which is where
we will meet. Right at the brown gated entrance.

All these practices will take place Thursday, November 2
After November 2, all night practices will be moved to an indoor track facility (due to the time change and lack of daylight), and practices will then start at 7 PM. The indoor track facility will be determined later.
Please note there may be some weekend practices in November and December during the day for those athletes who will be competing in cross-country meets in November and December. If such practices are held, they may likely be: (Sunday) November 5, (Saturday) November 25, (Sunday) November 26, (Saturday) December 2 and/or (Sunday) December 3 (TBD).
The season officially ends at the conclusion of the USATF Junior Olympics National Cross-Country Championship on Saturday, December 9 in Tallahassee, FL.
This program is for kids of all ages from 6-18 years old. Please be advised that any kids who are committed to their respective school cross-country teams for this fall season, they should finish out their season for their schools before (re-)joining our youth club per MHSAA (high school/junior high) rules
Cost: The cost for the program is $50 per child for the entire season. Please note that for families with two or more kids, the cost will be discounted by $25 for each kid beyond the first kid.   Some examples
1. A family with one kid will pay $50.
2. A family with two kids will pay $75 ($50 for the first and $25 for the second)
3. A family with three kids will pay $100 ($50 for the first kid, $25 for the second and another $25 for the third).
All new families will receive a FREE TRIAL membership for one week, and then payments will be due. Payments can also be made with cash or check — checks should be made payable to “AATC”. New families are encouraged to take full advantage of the FREE TRIAL and make sure the AATC cross-country program is a good fit for their kids before they pay, as no refunds are given once payment is made.
This covers the cost of any meets kids may compete in, regardless of whether they compete in those meets or not. This does not include the cost for any jogging passes for any kids who may be training indoors during the months of November and December for the last few meets. It doesn’t cover the cost of uniforms, which can cost up to $85 + tax
Parents with very young children should attend the practices and be prepared to either run behind their kids or act as course-marshals in the woods so they don’t get lost if they fall behind the other runners.
Even though we train 3 nights a week, practicing all three nights is not required if there are pre-existing conflicts. But attendance is highly recommended as much as possible to maintain/improve conditioning, for those competing in meets. Some of the parents with very young runners may opt for their kids to just train only, but not compete yet.
Derrick Jackson will be the Interim Head Cross-Country coach (Joe Codrington, our former Head Cross-Country coach, stepped down earlier this summer).
Gary Morgan will be one of our two Assistant Coaches
Brooke Callaghan, a former member of the University of Michigan Women’s Track & Field team, who is going into her senior year at UM, recently joined the staff, and she will be another Assistant Coach.
[I will be at most practices and meets as the team manager, and will also assist with the coaching as needed]
